NOD/Harris Surveys
Since the 1980’s, NOD has collaborated with the Harris Poll on numerous surveys on a variety of issues facing people with disabilities. The surveys enjoy wide coverage in the press, and results are frequently cited by policymakers, and by the disability community.
In 2010, the National Organization on Disability will release two new surveys, both funded by the Kessler Foundation, documenting the status of Americans with disabilities 20 years after the ADA: For information on the 2010 Survey of Americans with Disabilities, released in July 2010, visit www.2010DisabilitySurveys.org. In October, Kessler and NOD will release the 2010 Survey on Employment of People with Disabilities, for National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
2004 NOD/Harris Survey of Americans with Disabilities
The 2004 National Organization on Disability/Harris Survey of Americans with Disabilities documented critical gaps between Americans with disabilities and the general population. Key statistics include:
- Only 35 percent of people with disabilities reported being employed full or part time, compared to 78 percent of those who do not have disabilities.
- People with disabilities are three times more likely to live in poverty and have an annual household income below $15,000 (26 percent versus 9 percent).
- People with disabilities remain twice as likely to drop out of high school (21percent versus 10 percent).
- People with disabilities are twice as likely to have inadequate transportation (31 percent versus 13 percent), and a much higher percentage go without needed health care (18 percent versus 7 percent).
- People with disabilities are less likely to socialize, dine out, or attend religious services than their non-disabled counterparts.
- Not surprisingly given the persistence of these gaps, life satisfaction for people with disabilities also trails, with only 34 percent saying they are very satisfied compared to 61 percent of those without disabilities.
