Job Description 

The National Organization on Disability (NOD) is a private, non-profit organization that promotes the full participation and contributions of America’s 61 million people with disabilities. Today, the National Organization on Disability focuses on increasing employment opportunities for the 80-percent of working-age Americans with disabilities who are unemployed or under-employed.

The Director of Development is a vital member of the NOD team, reporting directly to the Managing Director of Workforce Solutions. They will primarily support revenue generation, research, fundraising and development and the Managing Director of Workforce Solutions.

Responsibilities and Duties 

Reporting to the Managing Director of Workforce Solutions and in close collaboration with the CEO, Board of Directors, program leadership, and marketing staff, the Director of Development will develop and execute a strategic fundraising plan that will guide the organization to meet ambitious fundraising goals, maximizing opportunities around foundation, corporate, government and individual fundraising. The Director of Development will also support the growth of membership of NOD’s Leadership Council by creating outreach strategies and building pipelines of corporate prospects through data-driven outreach and close collaboration with NOD’s relationship managers. They will play a critical role in designing and executing funding and relationship-building strategies.

Core Responsibilities include:

  • Plan and execute a development strategy that will ensure effective, coordinated and sustainable fundraising. Determine and target the optimal mix of foundation, corporate, individual and government funding. Develop the processes and procedures to achieve these goals.
  • In partnership with the CEO, develop and manage NOD’s relationships with all its current and potential funders, donors, and supporters, including Leadership Council members; Support program staff and management in building and maintaining effective and productive relationships with funders.
  • Lead the design and delivery of the high-quality proposals and reports required to support ongoing private and public fundraising activities.
  • Work with project directors to understand the priorities and funding opportunities relevant to their projects and conduct public and private funding prospect research.
  • Work with NOD’s partnerships manager to develop a strategy for lead generation and engagement for NOD’s Leadership Council with a focus on building processes and research procedures to support a pipeline of corporate prospects.
  • Supervise and develop one direct report.

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned development professional with a proven track record of success in developing and implementing effective, multi-dimensional development strategies and plans in dynamic and entrepreneurial nonprofit organizations. The new Director will be a strategic and creative thinker with strong presentation skills, able to communicate effectively with corporate, philanthropic and individual funders, board members and other constituents. They will be an organized, detail-focused individual who can be flexible and cheerful in responding to the needs of a small, fast-moving nonprofit. The ideal candidate will possess the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • An entrepreneurial, creative, and proactive approach to fundraising; a self-starter.
  • Demonstrated success in raising corporate, foundation and public sector dollars, preferably in an organization that builds impact through intermediaries, rather than through direct service.
  • Superior writing skills and communication abilities.
  • The poise and superior relationship management skills to work with foundation and corporate leaders, to cultivate relationships with program officers and decision-makers and to work with a high-profile nonprofit Board of Directors.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • A commitment to the mission of the NOD and an appreciation of the challenges and opportunities facing people with disabilities.
  • Experience raising funds for workforce development, disability, policy advocacy and/or research and demonstration initiatives a plus.
  • Experience launching an individual fundraising campaign a plus.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Logistics

  • Fully remote with monthly WeWork stipend if employee wants to work in an office environment.
  • Meetings in NYC three-four times a year (paid travel if you live outside the New York Metropolitan Area)
  • Salary range $115,000 to $135,000, depending on experience.
